Adobe to drop support for Type 1 fonts

Adobe Inc. will no longer support the use of Type 1 fonts starting in January. Once the industry standard in the printing world, this file format, introduced by Adobe in 1984 and also known as “PostScript” fonts, is being phased out in favor of the newer cross-platform format called OpenType.

What does this mean for you? Possibly nothing, unless you’re a graphic designer. However, it means a lot for us at Raintree Graphics. Eventually, we’ll also need to phase out the use of Type 1 fonts and use other fonts compatible with Adobe’s Creative Cloud suite of applications, as well as our rip systems and our e-commerce platform.

This is most likely to affect you if you are a repeat Raintree Graphics customer who prints the same products with changes. Since Type 1 fonts were once the industry standard, there’s a good chance many of your past orders used at least one Type 1 font. In these cases, we’ll need to replace these fonts with compatible fonts before we can print the item. We do have a large library of fonts, but there will be cases where we will not have a direct replacement in the correct format. Please remember that fonts are software. While some fonts are free, others are not. There will be cases where we’ll need to buy a replacement and charge you for it, or you may prefer to buy the font yourself so that you have a copy of it to use on future projects. Either way, we’ll need to contact you when this situation arises.

As always, we’ll work with you to make this transition as smooth as possible. We ask for your cooperation and patience as we navigate this development, which will affect nearly everyone in the graphic design and printing industries. If you are a designer or marketing person, please be proactive and acquire legal copies of OpenType fonts you use regularly in your branding and supply them to us when submitting files for print. Otherwise, please build in a little extra time in your schedules for anything we print for you going forward.
